Operated by Michigan State University, WKAR Radio Reading Service has served print-handicapped mid-Michigan listeners since its 1973 launch as 'The Radio Talking Book.' More than 100 volunteers read newspapers including the Lansing State Journal, Detroit Free Press, and New York Times, along with popular magazines and bestselling books — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Qualified listeners receive a free pre-tuned portable radio; the service is also available online via wkar.org.
