WMBR is the freeform, all-volunteer college radio station of MIT, broadcasting at 88.1 FM from Kendall Square in Cambridge since 1961. Open to both MIT students and Greater Boston community members, the station spans an eclectic range of music — jazz, punk, hip-hop, classical, and beyond — alongside public affairs programs and original talk shows, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Originally launched as WTBS, the station took the WMBR call letters in 1979 after Ted Turner purchased its previous name for his Atlanta broadcaster.
